ABOUT “SUNRISE’” AND “SUNSET”
In Quartzite, Arizona,
there is a boneyard of discarded machinery. old trucks, mining equipment, rocket launchers, cranes, and airplanes that wait
for tomorrow and the few visitors who happen by to take pictures.
We arrived at sunrise one morning on our way to
Prescott, and I shot the photo for “Sunrise”. Planning our trip home so that we arrived in Quartzite near the end of the day,
I shot the same plane from the other side for “Sunset”.
I enjoyed capturing the different qualities of light (sunrise,
and sunset) as well as the look of the metal and the overall mood of this plane that will never take to the skies again.

ABOUT “BLACK CAR 1” and “BLACK CAR 2”
I’ve always been
interested in paintings that depicted chrome and polished surfaces. I remember seeing a painting of a candy wrapper by a photo
realist painter (whose name I don’t know) at Jack Glenns Gallery in Corona Del Mar, back in the early 70’s. I was impressed
and felt that I could never paint like that.
Recently, I went to a car show with a friend of mine, took pictures
of cars, and tried my hand at it. It was fun just getting the paint to look like that. I like the illusion of surfaces that
are possible with oil paint and observation.

ABOUT “STREET ROD”
“Street Rod” to me is a “formal” exercise
in high key color, chrome, machine parts, function, and fun, placed within a cubist context of fragmented planes.
I
really enjoyed painting these restored classics even though I don’t even know the makes or models of the cars I painted.
